Description

Camellia anthracnose, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum camelliae-japonicae, is a common and destructive plant disease that primarily affects various species of the Camellia genus. The pathogen invades the vascular tissues and leaf surfaces, causing necrotic lesions that significantly impair the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

This fungal pathogen is highly opportunistic, thriving in humid, poorly ventilated environments such as greenhouses and indoor nurseries. While it primarily targets the leaves, severe infections can progress to stems and branches, potentially causing dieback of the entire shoot if the infection remains unchecked.

Diagnostic symptoms include the appearance of irregular, dark brown spots on the foliage, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the disease advances, tiny black fruiting bodies known as acervuli appear within these lesions. Under high humidity, these produce spores that are easily spread by splashing water or contaminated tools.

The spread of Colletotrichum camelliae-japonicae is heavily dependent on moisture. Wet conditions are critical for spore germination and colonization of host tissues. Proper horticultural hygiene, such as removing infected debris and maintaining adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow, is essential to minimize the risk of a widespread outbreak.

Successful management requires an integrated approach. Growers should prioritize preventative measures, such as avoiding overhead irrigation and maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization. In cases where the disease is established, chemical control using targeted fungicides—such as mancozeb, thiophanate-methyl, or copper-based compounds—is often necessary to protect the plant and stop further spore production.
