Description

The disease known as coffee anthracnose is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum cariniferi. This fungus is a significant threat to coffee production worldwide, impacting both the vegetative growth of the plant and the quality of the harvested coffee cherries.

The primary host for this pathogen is the coffee plant (Coffea species). The fungus is highly versatile and capable of infecting various plant parts, including leaves, stems, flowers, and developing fruits, often leading to yield reduction and poor crop quality.

Symptoms typically present as necrotic, dark, sunken lesions on the leaves and fruits. Under high humidity, the fungal growth produces characteristic masses of conidia, which appear as creamy or pinkish spots on the surface of the lesions, eventually causing premature leaf drop and fruit rot.

Development and spread of Colletotrichum cariniferi are favored by warm, humid environments with frequent rainfall. The spores are primarily dispersed by water splashes and wind, making dense plantations particularly vulnerable to rapid disease outbreaks during the rainy season.

To manage this disease, farmers should implement a robust integrated pest management strategy. This includes the removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce inoculum sources, the application of protective fungicides, and ensuring proper spacing between trees to improve air circulation and reduce humidity levels within the canopy.
