Description

Anthracnose of safflower is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum carthami. This fungus belongs to the class of Deuteromycetes and specifically targets safflower crops, causing severe physiological damage to the host plant throughout all developmental stages, from seedling emergence to seed maturation.

The primary host for this pathogen is safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). The disease affects both wild species and commercial hybrids. The pathogen poses a significant threat in regions where this oilseed crop is grown intensively, as the fungus is capable of surviving for several years within soil debris and crop residues.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as dark, sunken lesions or ulcers on stems, leaves, and flower heads. As the fungal mycelium develops, conidiomata (acervuli) form in the center of the necrotic tissue, appearing as small black dots. Under high humidity, affected tissues may become covered in a distinct pinkish spore mass, which facilitates further dispersal of the disease.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions. Optimal conditions for spore germination and infection spread include high atmospheric humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures ranging from +20°C to +25°C. Overcrowded plant stands and weed competition create a favorable microclimate that accelerates the progression of the disease.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, resulting in premature leaf desiccation, stem breakage, and malformation of the flower heads, which leads to substantial yield losses and reduced seed quality, including lower oil content. Effective management requires an integrated approach, including the use of certified disease-free seeds, strict crop rotation, deep incorporation of crop residues, and the timely application of fungicides during peak growth phases when initial symptoms appear.
