Description

The disease known as Cattleya anthracnose is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum cattleyicola. This fungus is a specialized pathogen that primarily targets orchid species, particularly those in the Cattleya genus, compromising the structural integrity and health of the plant's tissues.

This pathogen specifically attacks the leaves, pseudobulbs, and flowers of host plants. By colonizing the intercellular spaces and penetrating the epidermal layers, the fungus extracts nutrients, leading to tissue necrosis and the breakdown of cellular functions in the host, which can ultimately lead to plant death if left untreated.

Symptoms typically present as dark, sunken spots that may expand and merge over time. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces acervuli — small, spore-bearing structures that appear as tiny dots or slimy masses on the surface of the lesions. These spores are the primary source of secondary infections within an orchid collection.

Fungal development and dispersal are highly dependent on high ambient humidity and the presence of liquid water on leaf surfaces. Poor air circulation in greenhouses or indoor environments creates an ideal microclimate for Colletotrichum cattleyicola to thrive. The spores are easily disseminated by splashing water, rain, or contaminated tools.
