Chrysanthemum anthracnose is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum chrysanthemi. This fungus primarily attacks the aerial parts of plants, leading to severe necrosis and tissue decay. It is a significant concern for growers, as it can cause rapid decline in plant health and lead to substantial aesthetic and commercial losses.

The disease affects various chrysanthemum varieties, targeting foliage, stems, and blossoms. Younger tissues are often more susceptible to infection, but the pathogen can colonize mature plants under favorable environmental conditions. The presence of the fungus significantly disrupts the plant's ability to photosynthesize and transport nutrients, eventually leading to plant death if left untreated.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions that begin as small, water-soaked spots on leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand and turn dark brown or black, often with a defined border. In advanced stages, small, gelatinous spore masses (acervuli) may become visible on the surface of the lesions. Infected stems may show girdling, causing the parts of the plant above the lesion to wilt.

Favorable conditions for the spread of Colletotrichum chrysanthemi include high humidity, stagnant air, and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Rain splashes or overhead irrigation are primary drivers for spore dispersal within a crop canopy. The fungus persists in the soil and on infected plant debris, acting as a constant source of inoculum for subsequent growing cycles if sanitation is neglected.

Management strategies focus on cultural practices and chemical intervention. Growers should ensure proper spacing to increase airflow, remove and destroy infected plant materials immediately, and avoid overhead watering to keep leaf surfaces dry. When conditions are conducive to disease, applying appropriate systemic or contact fungicides is necessary. Regular monitoring and early detection remain the most effective ways to prevent catastrophic outbreaks in chrysanthemum crops.
