Citrus anthracnose is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum citricola. This organism is recognized for its ability to cause severe damage to citrus tissues, manifesting as leaf necrosis, twig dieback, and fruit decay, often occurring before or after harvest.

The host range is primarily limited to various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. The fungus persists in infected plant debris, twigs, and bark, serving as a primary inoculum source for new infections during the next growing season.

Initial symptoms typically appear as water-soaked spots that eventually develop into dark, sunken lesions. Under high humidity conditions, the centers of these lesions may display visible masses of fungal spores, often appearing salmon-pink or greyish in color, which are indicative of an active infection.

Disease outbreaks are heavily favored by high moisture, such as heavy rain, frequent overhead irrigation, or prolonged dew. The spores are primarily dispersed via water splashes, which carry the pathogen from infected twigs to healthy foliage, flowers, and developing young fruits.

Essential practices include the removal of dead or infected branches through pruning, maintaining canopy airflow to reduce leaf wetness, and applying appropriate copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during critical stages of plant development to prevent fruit spotting.
