Clivia anthracnose

The disease is caused by the phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum cliviicola, a member of the Ascomycota division. This pathogen is specifically associated with plants of the Amaryllidaceae family, with Clivia miniata being the most frequent host. It is classified as an anthracnose disease, primarily manifesting as necrotic lesions on foliage, which significantly impairs plant health and development.

The primary hosts of this fungus are Clivia species kept in nurseries, greenhouses, or domestic indoor environments. The pathogen thrives in leaf tissues, but under severe infection pressure, it may progress to the pseudostem, causing systemic weakness. Because Clivias are long-lived plants, the persistence of the fungus can lead to chronic decline if not addressed.

Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of small, chlorotic spots that gradually turn tan, brown, or black with a distinct margin. As the fungal colony matures, circular fruiting bodies known as acervuli develop, often visible as tiny black dots within the lesion. In advanced stages, the lesions may coalesce, leading to large necrotic areas and premature yellowing of the leaves.

The development of Colletotrichum cliviicola is heavily favored by high humidity and prolonged moisture on the leaf surface. High temperatures, typical for indoor settings, also accelerate the sporulation process. The pathogen is easily disseminated through splashing water, contaminated tools, and air currents, making rapid transmission between closely spaced plants a major concern for indoor plant collections.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is paramount: infected leaves should be removed and destroyed immediately. Fungicides, particularly those containing systemic active ingredients like tebuconazole or copper-based compounds, can be used to protect healthy foliage. Maintaining proper airflow, reducing leaf moisture, and avoiding overcrowding are critical preventive measures to keep the disease at bay.
