Description
The causative agent of this disease is the phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum coelogynes. As an opportunistic pathogen, it predominantly targets orchid species, utilizing specialized enzymes to degrade plant tissues. The fungus completes its life cycle by producing conidia, which serve as primary inoculum for infection during periods of high humidity and rainfall.
Orchids, particularly Coelogyne, Cattleya, and related epiphytic species, are the primary hosts for this fungus. The pathogen infiltrates the plant through natural openings like stomata or through mechanical wounds caused by pests or improper handling. Once inside, the hyphae spread intercellularly, eventually causing tissue collapse.
The visual symptoms of the disease are characterized by sunken, dark brown to black necrotic spots on leaves and stems. These lesions typically exhibit a concentric growth pattern. In humid conditions, moist masses of spores, often pinkish or grey, may appear on the surface of the lesions, further spreading the pathogen to adjacent leaves.
Environmental conditions are critical for disease development. Colletotrichum coelogynes thrives in warm temperatures (22°C to 28°C) and environments with stagnant air and prolonged moisture on foliage. These conditions are common in greenhouses where air circulation is inadequate, leading to rapid disease transmission within a plant population.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical intervention. Growers should immediately remove and destroy infected plant parts and improve airflow to reduce canopy humidity. Fungicides containing active ingredients such as copper oxychloride or systemic triazoles are effective when applied at the first sign of infection. Preventative measures remain the most critical aspect of long-term orchid health.
