The fungus Colletotrichum colombiense is a significant plant pathogen responsible for causing anthracnose in coffee plantations. As a member of the Colletotrichum genus, this species specializes in infecting various tissues of the coffee plant, ranging from fruits and leaves to woody stems, leading to severe physiological stress for the host.

The primary host for this fungus is Coffea arabica. The infection impacts the plant's vascular system and metabolic functions, which directly results in yield reduction. Fruits affected by the fungus are often unmarketable, as the disease causes deep necrotic lesions that compromise the quality of the coffee beans harvested from the crop.

Symptoms of Colletotrichum colombiense include the appearance of small, water-soaked spots that rapidly expand into dark, depressed lesions. Under humid conditions, these lesions become covered with masses of fungal spores, often appearing pinkish or white. Furthermore, the disease is frequently associated with dieback, causing twigs and branches to dry out and die from the tip downwards.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the disease's lifecycle. High relative humidity, persistent rainfall, and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C are ideal for spore germination and colonization of new tissue. Poorly managed plantations with dense canopies, which restrict airflow, are significantly more susceptible to widespread infection during the rainy season.

Effective management and disease control strategies are essential for maintaining plantation productivity. These include the removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce inoculum sources. Growers should also prioritize the use of preventive copper-based fungicides and systemic treatments, combined with careful pruning practices to ensure the plant canopy remains well-ventilated and dry.
