Description
Anthracnose is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum conoides. This fungus belongs to the Ascomycota division and acts as a parasitic organism that colonizes plant tissues, leading to lesions and structural decay of the affected plant organs.
This pathogen primarily targets leguminous crops, strawberries, and various solanaceous vegetables. It can infect all aerial parts of the host plant, causing significant physiological stress and reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage.
Common symptoms include sunken lesions on stems, leaves, and fruits, which often exhibit dark necrotic centers. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces conidial masses, often visible as pinkish or white slimy spore clusters on the surface of the infected tissue, which serve as the primary inoculum for further spread.
The spread of Colletotrichum conoides is heavily dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spores are disseminated via water splashes from rainfall or irrigation systems, as well as by wind gusts. It survives between seasons in crop debris, infested soil, and sometimes within infected seeds.
The economic impact of this disease is substantial, often resulting in severe fruit rot, stem girdling, and poor plant vigor. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including crop rotation, the use of certified disease-free seeds, proper canopy management to improve airflow, and the application of fungicides, are essential to mitigate the damage caused by this fungus.
