Jute anthracnose is a destructive plant disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum corchorum. It is a major limiting factor in jute production, causing significant economic losses by reducing both the yield and the quality of fiber harvested from affected fields.

The disease affects all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and seed pods. Stem infection is particularly critical, as the resulting necrotic lesions cause the fiber to become brittle, significantly lowering its market value and strength for industrial processing.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown or black circular spots on leaves, which gradually enlarge. On the stems, deep, sunken lesions appear, often bearing pinkish or salmon-colored spore masses, which are characteristic of the fungus during humid weather conditions.

High humidity and warm temperatures are the primary environmental drivers that favor the rapid growth and spread of Colletotrichum corchorum. Rain splashing helps move the spores from infected debris or stems to healthy plant tissue, facilitating secondary infection cycles.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this disease. Key practices include the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, diligent crop rotation, and the prompt removal of infected debris after harvest. Fungicide applications may also be necessary during periods of high humidity to protect growing crops.
