Description
The disease is caused by the phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum cordylinicola, a member of the Ascomycota division. This pathogen is a primary agent of anthracnose, a destructive fungal disease that targets various tropical and subtropical plants. The fungus survives by colonizing plant tissues, secreting toxins that break down cell walls and facilitate rapid necrotic expansion across leaves.
The primary host for this pathogen is the Cordyline genus, particularly Cordyline fruticosa. These plants, often grown in greenhouses, interior gardens, or nurseries, are highly susceptible to infection when the environment provides optimal conditions for fungal sporulation and germination. The pathogen spreads primarily through water splashes and infected plant debris.
Symptoms of Colletotrichum cordylinicola infection manifest as distinct leaf spots, often irregular or circular in shape. These spots typically begin as light green or yellow lesions, gradually turning brown or black as tissues die. During periods of high humidity, small pinkish or greyish fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear on the necrotic lesions, releasing spores that serve as sources for secondary infection.

Cultural practices should include the immediate removal of symptomatic leaves, optimizing spacing to improve airflow, and avoiding overhead watering. When chemical control is necessary, applications of broad-spectrum fungicides or specific products targeting anthracnose can prevent further spread and protect healthy tissue.
