Colletotrichum costaricense is a fungal plant pathogen recognized as the causative agent of anthracnose, a severe disease affecting various agricultural and ornamental crops. It belongs to the Colletotrichum genus, known for its significant impact on the quality and yield of tropical and subtropical plants worldwide.
The primary host for this fungus is the coffee plant (Coffea arabica). The pathogen targets the foliage, branches, and, most importantly, the coffee cherries. When left unchecked, Colletotrichum costaricense can lead to substantial reduction in coffee bean yield and quality, making it a critical concern for agricultural producers in regions where this pathogen is endemic.
Typical symptoms of infection include the emergence of dark, sunken lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. As the disease advances, these lesions often expand and merge, becoming necrotic. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces masses of conidia, which appear as slimy spore clusters, facilitating further spread of the pathogen across the plantation.
The development and spread of Colletotrichum costaricense are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures ranging between 20°C and 28°C. Frequent rainfall acts as a primary vector, splashing spores from infected debris onto healthy plant tissues. Wind and agricultural equipment also contribute significantly to the rapid dispersal of the fungus.
To effectively manage and prevent the spread of the disease, an integrated pest management (IPM) program is essential. Key strategies include the removal and destruction of infected plant material, ensuring proper spacing between plants to maximize airflow, and the timely application of approved chemical fungicides during critical growth stages or wet seasons to protect healthy tissues.
