Description
Turmeric anthracnose is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum curcumae. This disease primarily impacts the productivity of turmeric crops, causing severe foliage damage that limits photosynthetic potential. The pathogen is known for its ability to persist in infected rhizomes and soil debris, making it a recurring problem for farmers if proper management is not implemented.
The fungus target organs are mainly the leaves, leaf sheaths, and petioles. While the rhizome itself may not show direct lesions during the early stages, systemic infection or colonization from the soil can eventually affect the overall vigor of the crop. In severe cases, the entire plant structure becomes susceptible to rapid blight when environmental conditions favor the fungus.
Symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked, yellowish-brown spots on the leaf blade. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, coalesce, and turn into irregular necrotic patches with dark margins. Under humid conditions, the pathogen produces characteristic acervuli (fruiting bodies) in the center of the lesions, often releasing a visible pinkish-orange mass of conidia, which spreads the infection to healthy tissues.
The disease development is heavily influenced by high relative humidity (above 85%) and warm temperatures, typically between 25°C and 30°C. Heavy rainfall and wind-blown water splashes are the primary mechanisms for spore dispersal across the field. Lack of proper spacing and poor field drainage contribute to localized outbreaks by maintaining high humidity levels within the crop canopy.
Managing Colletotrichum curcumae requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions to minimize economic loss. Effective strategies include:
- Sourcing disease-free planting material to prevent primary inoculation.
- Implementing long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Applying preventive fungicide sprays during the rainy season.
- Maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate airflow.
- Prompt removal and destruction of infected foliage to reduce the inoculum load.
