Cuscuta anthracnose is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum cuscutae. This fungus is recognized as a specific parasite of dodder (Cuscuta spp.), an aggressive parasitic plant that impacts many crops. Unlike traditional crop pathogens, this fungus serves as a valuable ally in weed management programs by naturally attacking the parasitic weed.
The fungus acts by invading the stems of the dodder through specialized structures. Upon colonization, the mycelium spreads throughout the tissues of the host, disrupting its vascular system and absorbing nutrients. This biological interference effectively starves the dodder, preventing it from producing seeds and ultimately leading to the decay of the entire parasitic plant colony.
Diagnostic symptoms include the appearance of localized, dark, sunken lesions on the dodder stems. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand into necrotic patches. Optimal infection typically occurs during periods with frequent rainfall or heavy dew, which allow the spores to germinate and infect adjacent healthy stems. Efficient spread ensures that the fungus can manage infestations across large areas of farmland.

Agronomists investigate the mass cultivation of these fungal spores to spray them over infested fields, specifically targeting dodder in leguminous crops or carrot fields.
