Description

The causal agent of this disease is the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum cymbidiicola, a member of the ascomycetes class. This pathogen specifically targets plants within the Orchidaceae family, causing the condition commonly known as anthracnose. The fungus aggressively colonizes leaves and pseudobulbs, leading to severe tissue necrosis.

While the pathogen is most frequently associated with the genus Cymbidium, it can infect a wide range of tropical orchids maintained in greenhouses or indoor environments. Plants weakened by poor cultural practices, such as inadequate lighting or improper fertilization, are significantly more susceptible to colonization by this opportunistic fungus.

Initial symptoms are characterized by the appearance of small, circular, yellowish to brown spots that gradually enlarge and become darker. As the infection progresses, the centers of these lesions may display concentric zones. Under high humidity, the fungus produces acervuli, visible as small, pinkish or orange spore masses on the surface of the lesions.

The spread and development of Colletotrichum cymbidiicola are primarily driven by high ambient humidity and the presence of free water on plant surfaces. The spores (conidia) are disseminated by splashing water during irrigation, air currents, and contaminated handling tools, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through an entire plant collection.

  • Ensure proper air circulation to keep foliage dry.
  • Avoid overhead watering to prevent water accumulation in leaf axils.
  • Isolate symptomatic plants immediately to prevent further spread.
  • Sterilize pruning tools using ethanol or a strong disinfectant solution.
  • Apply prophylactic treatments with broad-spectrum fungicides.

The economic impact of Colletotrichum cymbidiicola is substantial, as it leads to the loss of photosynthetic area, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in the aesthetic value of the orchids. In severe infections, the fungus can progress to systemic colonization, eventually resulting in the complete death of the plant if aggressive management strategies are not implemented.
