Description
Colletotrichum destructivum is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing anthracnose in various legume species. It acts as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing living tissue before shifting to a necrotrophic phase. The pathogen is known for its ability to persist in soil, crop residues, and infected seeds, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.
The primary hosts of this fungus include clover (Trifolium spp.), alfalfa, and various other forage legumes. The disease is economically significant, as it can severely reduce both forage yield and the production of high-quality seeds. Its impact is most pronounced in areas where legume-based forage crops are intensive components of the agricultural system.
Symptoms typically manifest as dark, sunken lesions on stems, petioles, and leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions enlarge and often result in stem girdling, which causes the upper parts of the plant to wilt and die. In humid conditions, small fruiting bodies called acervuli develop within these spots, releasing masses of spores that are easily spread by wind and water splash.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. Warm temperatures (20°C to 28°C) combined with high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, or persistent dew provide ideal conditions for infection and rapid secondary spread. Mechanical injury to plants during harvesting or pest feeding often serves as an entry point for the fungal mycelium.
Integrated management is essential for controlling Colletotrichum destructivum. Key strategies include the use of certified disease-free seeds and the selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars. Implementing a crop rotation strategy that avoids continuous planting of susceptible legumes for at least three years is highly recommended. Proper field sanitation and the timely removal of crop debris help to decrease the overwintering population of the fungus.
