Description
Dracaena Anthracnose is caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum dracaenophilum, a common agent responsible for foliage diseases in various indoor and tropical plants. This pathogen is highly specialized and attacks the plant tissues, leading to systemic weakness and aesthetic decline.
The primary host for this disease is the Dracaena genus, including popular varieties like Dracaena fragrans or Dracaena marginata. While it mainly targets the leaves, severe cases can lead to the infection of the stems, causing a comprehensive physiological collapse of the host plant.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions that begin as small, water-soaked spots. These spots eventually turn brown or reddish-brown, often exhibiting a yellow halo.
- Small, dark, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear in the centers of lesions.
- Lesions may coalesce, causing large portions of the leaf to die back.
- Premature leaf drop occurs in advanced stages of the disease.

High humidity, poor air circulation, and moisture lingering on the foliage surface are the primary factors that facilitate the germination of fungal spores and the subsequent spread of the pathogen.
Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach. Infected plant parts must be promptly removed and disposed of to reduce inoculum pressure. Fungicides containing active ingredients like copper or chlorothalonil can be effective if applied early. Long-term management focuses on improving cultural practices, such as increasing spacing between plants, ensuring adequate ventilation, and utilizing bottom-watering techniques to keep foliage dry.
