Description

Anthracnose is primarily caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum fructicola. As a member of the Colletotrichum species complex, this fungus is a major concern in agriculture due to its high adaptability and ability to infect a wide array of plant hosts globally. It survives during off-seasons on crop residues or infected woody tissues.

The host range of Colletotrichum fructicola is extensive, including vital agricultural crops such as apples, strawberries, grapes, citrus, and various legumes. Its ability to switch hosts makes it a persistent challenge for farmers practicing crop rotation or managing diverse orchards, as it can easily jump between neighboring susceptible species.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, water-soaked, dark-brown or black spots on foliage and stems. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often forming sunken lesions. Under humid conditions, the surface of these lesions erupts with characteristic pink or orange masses of conidial spores, which serve as the primary source for further spreading.

Environmental factors are critical for the spread of the disease. Warm temperatures, ranging from +20°C to +30°C, combined with high humidity and leaf wetness, provide the perfect conditions for spore germination and infection. Rain splash is the primary mechanism for dispersing spores within the canopy and across field plots.

The economic impact is significant, as the pathogen directly affects both yield quantity and quality. Post-harvest decay is a major issue with this fungus, as infected fruits often appear healthy during harvest but rot rapidly during transit and storage. This results in substantial financial losses for growers and retailers alike.

Management strategies require an integrated approach:

  • Sanitation: Pruning and removing dead plant tissues to lower inoculum levels.
  • Cultural practices: Improving air circulation and using drip irrigation to keep foliage dry.
  • Chemical control: Applying preventive fungicides, such as copper-based products or strobilurins, during critical growth stages.
  • Resistant varieties: Selecting plant cultivars known to have natural resistance to the pathogen.
