Description
The pathogen responsible for foxglove anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum fuscum. This fungus is a specialized parasite that targets members of the genus Digitalis. The disease is characterized by the formation of necrotic spots, leading to tissue collapse, and is a significant concern for both medicinal herb producers and ornamental plant nurseries.
The primary host for this pathogen is the foxglove (Digitalis purpurea and other species). The infection can manifest on leaves, stems, and flower spikes. Young seedlings are particularly susceptible, as a severe outbreak can lead to damping-off or rapid wilting, effectively ruining the entire crop cycle before the plants reach maturity.
Symptoms typically start as small, water-soaked spots that soon turn brown or tan with a distinct darker margin. As the lesion expands, black fungal fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear in the center of the spots. In humid conditions, the fungus may produce characteristic salmon-colored or pinkish spore masses. Severely infected leaves often curl, wither, and drop prematurely, causing stunted growth.
The development of Colletotrichum fuscum is strongly influenced by warm and humid conditions, typically between 20°C and 25°C. The fungus thrives when there is prolonged leaf wetness, often caused by frequent rainfall or overhead irrigation. Spores are dispersed through splashing water, wind, and contaminated gardening tools or infected debris left in the field from previous seasons.
The economic impact of this disease is significant due to the reduction in both the yield and the quality of the raw material. For pharmaceutical purposes, the concentration of digitalis glycosides can be adversely affected by the stress of the infection. Furthermore, heavy foliage damage makes the plants unattractive and potentially unmarketable, necessitating rigorous integrated pest management practices.
- Sanitation: Remove and destroy all diseased plant debris at the end of the season.
- Crop Rotation: Avoid planting Digitalis in the same area for several years.
- Spacing: Provide adequate spacing between plants to maximize airflow and minimize humidity.
