Colletotrichum fusiforme is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing anthracnose in various woody plants. As an ascomycete, this pathogen is recognized for its ability to cause necrotic lesions on stems, twigs, and foliage, posing a significant risk to tree nurseries and natural forest ecosystems.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include several deciduous tree species, particularly oaks and other hardwood varieties. Young seedlings are especially vulnerable, as the fungus can cause girdling of stems, leading to severe stunted growth or the complete death of the plant in nursery settings.
Symptoms of an infection typically manifest as dark, sunken spots on leaves and branches. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, and under conditions of high humidity, the fungus produces conidiomata, which appear as small, cushion-like structures on the diseased tissue.
