Colletotrichum guizhouense is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Colletotrichum genus, known for causing anthracnose, a severe disease in various plant species. As an ascomycete fungus, it spreads primarily through asexual spores known as conidia, which are efficiently dispersed by splashing rain, wind, or contaminated agricultural machinery. This pathogen is increasingly recognized as a significant threat to global agriculture due to its broad host range and persistence.

The host range of C. guizhouense is diverse, impacting various economic crops including solanaceous vegetables (tomatoes, peppers), cucurbits (cucumbers, melons), and several berry-producing plants. It can infect almost any part of the plant anatomy, including leaves, stems, flowers, and developing fruits, potentially compromising both quality and yield in commercial farming operations.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, sunken necrotic lesions that are dark or black in appearance. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand and may coalesce, leading to tissue collapse. Under high humidity conditions, the centers of these lesions frequently develop masses of fungal spores, often appearing as distinct, colored acervuli (pink or orange sticky masses), which serve as primary inoculum for secondary spread.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease cycle. The pathogen thrives in high-humidity environments (above 80% relative humidity) combined with moderate temperatures, generally ranging from 20°C to 28°C. The fungus can persist in the environment for extended periods by surviving in infected plant debris, soil, or even as latent infections within seed stocks, making long-term management a complex task for agronomists.

The damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced marketability of fresh produce, premature defoliation, and significant reductions in total crop yield. Effective disease management strategies include:

  • Sourcing certified disease-free seeds or seedlings.
  • Implementing strict field sanitation to remove infected plant material post-harvest.
  • Practicing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Applying preventive fungicide treatments, particularly during wet and humid weather.
  • Improving plant canopy airflow to minimize leaf wetness duration.
