Colletotrichum helleniense is a pathogenic fungus recognized as a causal agent of anthracnose, a severe fungal disease affecting a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. This pathogen specializes in attacking plant surfaces, leading to tissue necrosis and significant physiological stress in the host plants.
The host range of Colletotrichum helleniense includes various broad-leaved plants, fruits, and nursery stock. When environmental conditions favor the fungus, it can cause rapid decline in the plant population. The disease typically impacts leaves, stems, and fruits, often leading to total loss of affected organs if management steps are not implemented in time.
Symptoms of the infection usually appear as necrotic, dark, sunken lesions on the leaf blades and stems. These spots often expand rapidly under favorable moisture conditions, causing premature leaf drop or fruit rotting. The presence of acervuli (spore-producing structures) within the lesion center is a hallmark sign used for visual identification of the disease in the field.
Development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on high humidity and warm temperatures. Water droplets from rain or sprinkler irrigation act as the primary vector for spreading conidia from infected tissues to healthy ones. Furthermore, wounded or stressed tissues are much more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungal mycelium.
The damage caused by this pathogen is detrimental to both the productivity and the aesthetic quality of plants. Management relies on an integrated approach: avoiding moisture accumulation on foliage, removing sources of inoculum, and applying specific fungicides. Preventive cultural practices are essential for maintaining a healthy growing environment and minimizing the risk of outbreaks.
