The fungal pathogen Colletotrichum hippeastri is the primary cause of anthracnose in various bulbous ornamental plants, particularly those belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. This pathogen is highly specialized and is known to cause severe damage to crops like Hippeastrum, Clivia, and Amaryllis.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of sunken, reddish-brown or dark lesions on leaves, stems, and flower stalks. As the fungus progresses, these lesions develop distinct margins and may produce masses of salmon-colored or grey spores under high humidity, which are visible to the naked eye.

Optimal conditions for the development and spread of Colletotrichum hippeastri include prolonged leaf wetness, high relative humidity, and poor airflow. Spores are primarily disseminated by water splash during irrigation, rainfall, or handling of infested plants with contaminated tools, which quickly spreads the pathogen throughout a greenhouse or nursery.

The pathogenicity of this fungus is significant as it disrupts the plant's physiological functions. If left unchecked, the fungus invades the bulb tissue, causing rot and systemic collapse. This frequently results in the complete loss of the plant, especially in high-density cultivation settings where the fungus can move between pots easily.

Management requires a comprehensive approach, starting with the selection of pathogen-free bulbs and maintaining strict sanitation protocols. Regular inspections are crucial for early detection. If infection occurs, affected tissues must be excised, and fungicide applications, particularly systemic fungicides, should be utilized to suppress further fungal sporulation.
