Description
Persimmon anthracnose is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum horii. This fungus is a primary threat to persimmon cultivation, capable of causing severe economic losses in both fruit yield and marketability.
The host range is primarily limited to the genus Diospyros, with persimmon trees being the most susceptible. The fungus targets leaves, shoots, flowers, and fruits, with fruit infection being the most devastating stage of the disease cycle.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, dark circular spots on fruits, which gradually expand and become sunken lesions. Under humid conditions, these spots produce characteristic pinkish or orange spore masses, often leading to fruit mummification and premature fruit drop.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and frequent rainfall. These factors promote spore germination and transmission, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly throughout the canopy during the growing season.
Effective management includes a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key measures include:
- Sanitary pruning of infected branches during the dormant season.
- Removal and destruction of fallen leaves and mummified fruits.
- Improving orchard ventilation through proper canopy management.
