Colletotrichum incanum is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing anthracnose, a severe disease affecting a variety of plants. This fungus belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is known for its ability to produce lesions on various plant parts. The pathogen overwinters as mycelium or spores in plant debris, in the soil, or on infected seed surfaces, remaining dormant until favorable environmental conditions initiate a new infection cycle.

The host range of Colletotrichum incanum includes several legume species, ornamental plants, and various herbaceous crops. The pathogen attacks stems, foliage, flowers, and fruits. Infections typically begin when conidia are splashed by rain or wind onto susceptible host tissues. Once the spores germinate, the fungus penetrates the plant cuticle and colonizes the underlying tissues, leading to cell death and necrotic lesions.

Symptoms of anthracnose typically appear as circular or irregular sunken lesions that are dark brown or black in color. As the lesion expands, it often develops a chlorotic halo or a distinct darker margin. Under humid conditions, orange or pinkish spore masses can be observed on the surface of the lesions. Severe infection causes systemic weakening, premature leaf drop, and dieback of stems, which can significantly stunt the plant's growth.

Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. High humidity (above 85%) and warm temperatures (20–28°C) create the perfect environment for the pathogen to thrive. During these periods, the production of conidia increases exponentially, facilitating secondary infections that can rapidly spread throughout a field or garden if left unmanaged.

Effective control of Colletotrichum incanum requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, removal of infected plant debris, and selecting well-drained planting sites are fundamental. Chemical control, involving the application of registered fungicides, should be initiated preventively or at the very first sight of symptoms. Regular monitoring of crop health and maintaining proper plant spacing are also essential to reduce humidity and discourage the pathogen's spread.
