Colletotrichum insertae is a pathogenic fungus known to cause anthracnose in a variety of fruit-bearing plants, most notably apple trees. This pathogen is a significant concern for pomology, as it directly impacts the quality and storage stability of the fruit harvest.

The disease primarily targets pome fruits, including apples and pears. The fungus is capable of infecting fruit in the orchard, but it is frequently responsible for post-harvest decay, appearing on fruits that seemed healthy during the picking process, which poses significant challenges for logistics and storage.

Typical symptoms of this infection include the development of circular, sunken lesions on the fruit skin, which range in color from brown to black. In the center of these lesions, the fungus develops acervuli, which are specialized structures producing masses of spores. The spread of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and warm temperatures, which facilitate spore germination and colonization. The pathogen survives the winter in mummified fruit, dead twigs, and bark, serving as a reservoir for infection in the following growing season.
