Description
Colletotrichum japonicum is a pathogenic fungus that serves as the primary causative agent of soybean anthracnose. This fungal disease is recognized as a significant constraint to soybean production in many agricultural regions, impacting both the yield quantity and the nutritional quality of the grain.
The primary host for this pathogen is soybean (Glycine max). While the fungus is highly specialized, it displays a broad capacity to infect various plant tissues, including roots, stems, pods, and seeds, which facilitates the transmission of the disease through different developmental stages of the soybean plant.
Symptoms typically manifest as irregular, dark-brown, sunken lesions on the stems and leaf petioles. Under high humidity, these lesions become covered with small, black, cushion-like structures known as acervuli, which produce masses of conidia. These lesions can cause girdling of stems, leading to plant wilting and premature senescence.
The disease development is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly warm temperatures and frequent, prolonged rainfall. High relative humidity is critical for spore germination and colonization of the host tissue, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly within a field via water splashes and wind currents.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling C. japonicum. Recommended strategies include:
- Utilizing resistant soybean varieties.
- Treating seeds with appropriate systemic fungicides.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops.
- Managing plant debris through deep plowing to reduce primary inoculum.
- Applying foliar fungicides during the reproductive stages if conditions favor disease outbreaks.
