The fungus affects a diverse range of hosts, including coffee, citrus, and various legumes. It invades the plant tissues, leading to lesions on leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, which significantly reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of the affected harvest.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as sunken, necrotic spots on the surface of the plant parts. Under high humidity conditions, the development of acervuli is observed, where the fungus produces masses of spores, often appearing as slimy pink or orange droplets that serve as a source of secondary infection.
Environmental factors, such as high temperatures and persistent humidity or heavy rainfall, are critical for the development and spread of the disease. The pathogen spreads primarily through wind-borne spores and rain splashes, often colonizing tissues that have been weakened by stress or physical damage.
