The fungus Colletotrichum jiangxiense is a significant plant pathogen responsible for causing anthracnose across various essential agricultural crops. Classified as an ascomycete, this fungus is known for its high virulence and ability to persist in debris, soil, or even as latent infections in asymptomatic host tissues, making it a persistent challenge for farmers and agronomists worldwide.
The host range of Colletotrichum jiangxiense primarily encompasses cucurbits and solanaceous crops. Among the most susceptible are cucumbers, melons, peppers, and tomatoes. The pathogen effectively targets all parts of the host plant, from the foliage and stems to the developing fruits, which often exhibit severe decay leading to significant post-harvest losses and reduced marketability of the produce.
Symptoms typically present as sunken, dark-colored lesions on leaves and stems. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand and merge, often encircling the stems and leading to wilting. Under conditions of high humidity, the lesions develop characteristic salmon-colored or orange spore masses, which are a definitive sign of active sporulation and rapid spread of the disease within the canopy.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High relative humidity and warm temperatures ranging between 22°C and 30°C provide the optimal climate for Colletotrichum jiangxiense. The pathogen propagates primarily through splash-dispersed conidia, which move from plant to plant via raindrops, irrigation systems, or contaminated agricultural equipment during field operations.
The damage caused by this pathogen includes severe defoliation, stunted growth, and fruit rot, which can devastate crop yields if left unmanaged. Control measures emphasize a holistic approach, including the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, rotating crops to break the disease cycle, and implementing chemical control using fungicides such as carbendazim, mancozeb, or triazoles to protect sensitive stages of plant growth.
