Kniphofia anthracnose is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum kniphofiae. This pathogen is a specialized fungus that affects plants of the genus Kniphofia. It acts as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing plant tissues without immediate destruction, but eventually causing severe necrosis, leading to the rapid deterioration of the plant's health and aesthetic value.

The primary host range includes various ornamental species of Kniphofia grown in landscapes, botanic gardens, and nurseries. The fungus targets all above-ground structures, including foliage, stalks, and flower buds. High-density planting in landscape design significantly increases the risk of the disease spreading from infected individuals to the entire population.

The symptoms of the infection typically appear as circular or irregular dark brown to black lesions on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, the centers of these lesions may become sunken or develop small, pin-sized spore-bearing structures known as acervuli. Under high humidity, these structures produce masses of conidia, causing the leaves to wither, curl, and eventually drop off.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of Colletotrichum kniphofiae. The fungus thrives in warm temperatures between 20°C and 25°C, coupled with high humidity levels. Rain splash and overhead irrigation are the primary vectors for spore dispersal, as water films allow the fungal spores to germinate and penetrate the plant cuticles effectively.

Control and management strategies should be applied in an integrated manner:

  • Strict sanitation protocols including the removal and disposal of all infected plant debris.
  • Avoidance of overhead irrigation to maintain a dry leaf surface and limit fungal germination.
  • Improving air circulation by maintaining adequate plant spacing.
  • Application of protective and systemic fungicides, such as mancozeb or triazole-based compounds, when environmental conditions are conducive to infection.
