Colletotrichum laticiphilum is a pathogenic fungal species belonging to the genus Colletotrichum, which is widely recognized as the causal agent of anthracnose in various plants. This fungus acts as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing host tissues without causing immediate cell death and later transitioning to a necrotrophic phase, where it destroys plant cells to obtain nutrients, resulting in visible lesions and tissue necrosis.

The host range of Colletotrichum laticiphilum includes various fruit trees, tropical crops, and legumes. The pathogen is particularly devastating to commercial crops because it can affect fruit quality, foliage, and structural stems. Its ability to survive on asymptomatic plant tissues or as latent infections makes it a challenging pathogen to detect until visible signs of decay appear, often near harvest time.

Typical symptoms include the development of dark, sunken spots on leaves, stems, and ripening fruits. As the disease progresses, these lesions often expand and merge, causing premature fruit drop or shriveling. In humid conditions, the surface of these lesions may develop small, cushion-like structures known as acervuli, which erupt through the plant epidermis and release masses of spores, often visible as a slimy, pinkish-orange deposit.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on moisture and temperature. High relative humidity (above 85%) and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C are optimal for spore germination and infection. Rain splashes, wind-blown mist, and infected tools are the primary methods of dispersal, facilitating the rapid spread of the pathogen across fields or greenhouses during the peak growing season.

Management of the disease requires an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and preventive chemical treatments. Because the fungus survives on debris, field hygiene is crucial for breaking the disease cycle.
