Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum lauri, which is a specialized plant pathogen responsible for anthracnose. It primarily targets plants within the Lauraceae family, leading to significant damage to leaf tissue and stems. This fungus is known for its ability to survive in both infected plant debris and soil, making it a persistent threat in agricultural and nursery environments.
Laurel species are the primary hosts for this pathogen. Infections are frequently observed in plantations where laurel is cultivated for foliage or essential oils, as well as in residential landscapes. The fungus is opportunistic, quickly establishing itself in young, tender tissues during periods of vigorous vegetative growth if environmental conditions are conducive to fungal development.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots on the foliage, which can range from tan to dark brown. As the disease progresses, these spots often expand and coalesce, leading to large areas of tissue death. Under high humidity, the centers of these lesions may display the characteristic fungal fruiting bodies (acervuli), which produce a visible mass of conidia, spreading the infection further.
The spread and severity of Colletotrichum lauri are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High moisture levels, such as frequent rainfall, overhead irrigation, or dew, are essential for spore germination and infection. Warm temperatures, generally between 20°C and 28°C, create the ideal climate for the fungus to multiply and spread throughout the canopy of the host plant.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant health. Key control measures include:
- Pruning and destroying infected branches to reduce inoculum sources.
- Applying protective fungicides during humid or rainy weather conditions.
- Ensuring proper plant spacing to improve air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
- Maintaining optimal plant vigor through balanced fertilization to increase natural resistance.
