Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum lentis, an ascomycete pathogen that primarily affects lentil crops. It is a highly specialized fungus that causes severe damage, leading to significant yield losses in agricultural production globally. It remains a major challenge for pulse crop protection.
The primary host for this pathogen is the lentil (Lens culinaris). The infection can originate from infected seeds or persist in crop debris left in the soil from previous seasons. Once introduced, the fungus can rapidly colonize the field during the growing season, especially if environmental conditions are favorable for its development.
Symptoms of anthracnose typically include the appearance of necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and pods. These lesions start as small, discolored spots that gradually expand and develop dark, sunken centers containing acervuli, which are the fungal fruiting bodies. In severe cases, the stems can become girdled, leading to plant wilting and death.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Colletotrichum lentis. High humidity and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C are optimal for the pathogen. Rain splashes, wind-driven moisture, and heavy morning dews significantly accelerate the dispersal of spores from plant to plant, facilitating a rapid spread of the disease.
The impact of this disease is profound, causing substantial reduction in both yield and grain quality. Affected seeds are often shriveled and may have reduced germination rates, which in turn leads to poor crop emergence in the following season. Effective management is essential to minimize these economic losses.
