The fungus Colletotrichum limetticola is the primary pathogen responsible for lime anthracnose. This disease is a significant threat to citrus cultivation, particularly affecting young, tender tissues. As an ascomycete fungus, it thrives by colonizing the plant's surface and penetrating the protective layers during periods of rapid vegetative growth.
The primary host for this pathogen is the lime tree (Citrus aurantifolia), though other citrus species can also be susceptible. The fungus targets foliage, flowers, and young shoots, often causing systemic damage if left untreated. Young nursery stock is particularly vulnerable to the rapid progression of the disease.
Initial symptoms are characterized by small, dark, and often sunken spots on leaves and shoots. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge, leading to necrosis and premature defoliation. In moist environments, the infected areas produce spore masses that appear as distinct pink or salmon-colored pustules, signaling the active phase of the pathogen's life cycle.
The development of Colletotrichum limetticola is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and rainfall. Water droplets serve as the main mechanism for spore dispersal, carrying the pathogen from infected branches to healthy tissue. Stagnant air and poor canopy management exacerbate the spread of the fungus within the orchard.
Effective control requires an integrated management strategy. Regular pruning of dead or diseased wood is essential to remove the inoculum reservoir. Furthermore, applying fungicides during vulnerable growth stages and ensuring proper orchard sanitation are key to minimizing losses. Maintaining optimal tree spacing and airflow is also crucial for preventing disease outbreaks.
