Description
The pathogen Colletotrichum limonicola is a fungal species responsible for anthracnose disease in citrus trees. It functions as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing host cells without killing them, then shifting to a necrotrophic phase where it destroys host tissue. This organism is specifically adapted to citrus hosts, causing significant physiological stress to the plant.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various lemon cultivars and limes. Anthracnose affects all aerial organs of the plant, including leaves, twigs, flowers, and fruits. The economic impact is particularly severe in orchards and greenhouses where the disease can cause major losses in fruit yield and post-harvest quality.
Symptoms typically manifest as dark, sunken lesions on leaves and fruit. As the disease progresses, these lesions develop acervuli—small, dark fruiting bodies that produce masses of conidia, often appearing as slimy pink or orange droplets under humid conditions. Defoliation and dieback of terminal branches are also common outcomes of heavy infection.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and temperatures between 22°C and 26°C. The conidia are dispersed by water splash, rain, or irrigation systems. Because the fungus can remain latent in plant tissues, symptoms may often appear suddenly when the host plant undergoes stress.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to reduce inoculum levels and protect healthy tissues. Key practices include:
- Pruning and removing infected plant debris to minimize the source of spores.
- Improving orchard air circulation to decrease humidity around the canopy.
- Applying protective copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during vulnerable growth stages.
- Implementing strict quarantine protocols for new plant stock to prevent the introduction of the pathogen.
