The causative agent of this disease is the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum liriopes. This fungus is a specialized pathogen that triggers anthracnose, a common fungal disease that affects various species of ornamental plants within the Liriope genus, frequently found in landscaping and gardens.

The primary host range includes Liriope muscari and related species. Because these plants are valued for their lush, grass-like foliage, the infection significantly impacts their aesthetic appeal, often rendering entire landscape beds unsightly and potentially weakening the overall plant health over time.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, chlorotic spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and turn brown or dark grey. As the lesion matures, the center may become necrotic and dry, and small, dark fruiting bodies known as acervuli appear, which are responsible for the subsequent spread of fungal spores.

The development of the disease is heavily favored by warm, humid environmental conditions and prolonged leaf wetness. Spores are disseminated primarily through water splash from rain or overhead irrigation, as well as via wind currents, making crowded or poorly ventilated plantings highly susceptible to rapid outbreaks.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical control measures to mitigate the damage. Integrated pest management strategies are recommended to maintain plant vigor and prevent the establishment of the pathogen in the garden environment:
