Description

The pathogen responsible for this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum melonis. It is a filamentous fungus belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. As a primary agent of anthracnose in various cucurbits, it can persist for long periods in plant debris, contaminated soil, or on infected seeds, representing a significant challenge for agricultural production.

The disease affects a wide range of cucurbit crops, including melons, watermelons, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squashes. Infections occur throughout the growing season, particularly when the canopy is dense, which restricts airflow and maintains high humidity levels around the foliage and fruit surfaces.

Symptomatology involves the appearance of circular or irregular dark spots on leaves, stems, and fruits. As the disease progresses, these spots often coalesce, causing tissue necrosis and blighting of the leaves. On fruit, the fungus creates deep, sunken, dark-colored lesions, often covered with masses of pink or orange conidia, which serve as the primary source of secondary infections.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease development, with warm temperatures (20–28°C) and prolonged periods of leaf wetness or high humidity being the most favorable. Spores are disseminated primarily by splashing rain, overhead irrigation, contaminated machinery, and human activities within the field or greenhouse environment.

The economic impact of Colletotrichum melonis can be devastating, leading to substantial yield losses and poor quality of marketable fruit. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach: utilizing resistant cultivars, practicing rigorous sanitation by removing infected crop debris, implementing proper crop rotation, and applying recommended protective or systemic fungicides at the early stages of disease appearance.
