The fungus Colletotrichum metake is the primary pathogen responsible for the disease known as bamboo anthracnose. It belongs to the Colletotrichum genus, which comprises numerous species of pathogenic fungi known for causing severe necrotic lesions on various plant species worldwide.

This fungus specifically targets bamboo plants, with Pseudosasa japonica (Metake bamboo) being a notable host. The infection typically colonizes the foliage and culms, negatively impacting both the structural integrity and the aesthetic appearance of the bamboo groves.

Diagnostic symptoms of this disease include the formation of irregular necrotic lesions on the leaves, which often display a dark border. As the disease progresses, acervuli (fruiting bodies) appear on the surface of the lesions, where the pathogen produces masses of conidia. This results in chlorosis, leaf curl, and eventually extensive defoliation, which severely stunts the plant's growth.

The development of Colletotrichum metake is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Moisture is essential for the germination of fungal spores, allowing them to penetrate the host tissues efficiently. Wind-blown rain is the primary mechanism for the rapid spread of spores to healthy plant parts.

Effective management strategies for bamboo anthracnose involve both cultural and chemical practices. Growers are advised to remove and destroy infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum load. Maintaining proper spacing between plants to improve air circulation and avoiding overhead irrigation can significantly mitigate the risk of infection.
