Colletotrichum musae is a pathogenic fungus responsible for banana anthracnose, a major post-harvest disease affecting banana crops globally. This fungus is a member of the Colletotrichum genus and acts as a latent pathogen, meaning it infects the fruit long before the actual symptoms of rotting become visible to the naked eye during the ripening stage.

The host range is primarily limited to species and cultivars within the Musa genus. While the infection can occur on leaves and fruit bunches in the field, the most significant damage occurs post-harvest, leading to severe economic losses for exporters and retailers who deal with fresh produce that spoils rapidly during transport.

Symptoms are characterized by the development of dark, sunken lesions on the banana peel. As the fruit ripens, these lesions enlarge and coalesce. Under high humidity, the centers of these spots become covered with masses of conidia, often showing a distinctive pink or orange coloration. The underlying pulp usually becomes soft and mushy, rendering the fruit completely unmarketable.

The development and spread of Colletotrichum musae are heavily reliant on moisture. The conidia are disseminated by water splashes, such as rain or overhead irrigation, landing on the fruit surface and forming appressoria to penetrate the peel. The infection remains dormant until physiological changes in the banana during ripening trigger the fungus to colonize the fruit tissue.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices, such as removing senescent leaves and cleaning debris from the plantation, are crucial for reducing inoculum levels. During processing, post-harvest fungicide treatments (such as prochloraz or thiabendazole) are standard industry practices. Additionally, strictly controlling ripening temperatures and maintaining good ventilation are essential to inhibit fungal development during transit.
