Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum neosansevieriae, which is a specialized agent responsible for severe anthracnose infections in sansevieria plants. This pathogen invades the plant tissue, causing progressive degradation and necrosis. It is recognized as one of the most destructive diseases for succulents of this genus in both indoor collections and commercial greenhouses.

Symptoms typically start as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves, which gradually turn brown or reddish-brown. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand and become sunken. Under favorable conditions, the pathogen produces tiny black fungal fruiting bodies (acervuli) within the lesions, which serve as reservoirs for spore production.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Colletotrichum neosansevieriae. High humidity levels, poor air circulation, and overhead watering promote the germination of spores and facilitate their spread to healthy tissues. The fungus can easily persist on infected debris or contaminated surfaces, waiting for the right conditions to trigger a new outbreak.

The damage caused by this fungus can be devastating, leading to rapid loss of foliage and potential death of the entire plant. Because sansevieria leaves are thick and succulent, once the fungus enters the tissue, it can quickly compromise the plant's structural integrity, causing leaves to collapse and die, especially when the infection reaches the base of the plant.

To effectively manage and prevent sansevieria anthracnose, a combination of cultural and chemical strategies is recommended:

  • Remove and destroy all infected leaves immediately to prevent further spread.
  • Improve ventilation to lower ambient humidity around the plants.
  • Avoid overhead irrigation; water only the soil directly.
  • Apply professional-grade fungicides containing active ingredients like azoxystrobin or tebuconazole during active outbreaks.
