Description

The causative agent of pepper anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum nigrum, a significant pathogen affecting solanaceous crops. This fungus is classified as a member of the Ascomycota and is widely distributed in regions where peppers and tomatoes are grown, often leading to severe crop quality degradation.

This pathogen mainly affects species within the Solanaceae family, including pepper (Capsicum spp.), tomatoes, and eggplants. The fungus survives primarily in soil debris, on weed hosts, and within infected seeds, providing a persistent source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons.

Symptoms of anthracnose typically appear as sunken, water-soaked spots on fruits. As the infection progresses, these lesions turn dark brown or black. Within these spots, small, dark fruiting bodies known as acervuli form. Under high humidity, these structures release masses of spores, often visible as pinkish or creamy sticky droplets on the fruit surface.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Colletotrichum nigrum thrives in warm, humid climates, with optimal infection occurring at temperatures between 22°C and 28°C. Frequent rainfall, dew, and overhead irrigation provide the necessary moisture for spore germination and spread across the field.

Management of this disease requires a multifaceted approach. Preventive strategies include the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, strict adherence to crop rotation (avoiding solanaceous crops for 3-4 years), and the removal of crop residues. Chemical control through the application of protectant and systemic fungicides is essential during the pre-harvest period to reduce fruit decay and ensure marketable yields.
