The fungus Colletotrichum ochracea is the primary causal agent of anthracnose in sunflower crops. As a plant pathogenic fungus, it is known for causing significant necrosis in host tissues, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and disrupted vascular transport within the plant.

This disease specifically impacts Helianthus annuus (sunflower). It manifests across various plant organs, including cotyledons, leaves, stems, and the head. Infection can significantly impair the yield potential if the plants are attacked during the early stages of development or the seed-filling period.
