Description
Basil anthracnose is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum ocimi. This fungus is known for its ability to attack various parts of the basil plant, causing necrotic lesions that significantly reduce both the yield and the ornamental or culinary quality of the herbs.
The symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, dark, water-soaked spots on the leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and often develop concentric rings, turning into sunken, necrotic patches. In high humidity, the centers of these spots may produce spore masses, which appear as tiny, dark, raised structures known as acervuli.
Development of this pathogen is strictly regulated by environmental conditions. Warm temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 28 °C, combined with prolonged periods of leaf wetness or high ambient humidity, provide the perfect scenario for rapid fungal spore germination and penetration of the plant tissue.
The damage caused by Colletotrichum ocimi can be devastating for commercial herb producers. Infected plants lose their marketability quickly due to the ugly spots and the tendency of the pathogen to cause stem collapse. Furthermore, the disease is highly contagious and spreads easily via splashing water, contaminated tools, or infested seeds.
- Purchase certified disease-free seeds or treated seed lots.
- Implement drip irrigation to keep leaf surfaces dry.
- Improve greenhouse ventilation to reduce overall humidity levels.
- Remove and destroy all crop debris immediately after harvest to disrupt the disease cycle.
- Apply preventive fungicides or bio-control agents based on local regional agricultural recommendations.
