Description
The causal agent of orchid anthracnose is the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum orchidearum. This fungal disease significantly impacts the health and visual quality of various orchid species by colonizing leaf tissues, stems, and pseudobulbs, which often leads to tissue necrosis and eventual plant decline if left untreated.
Orchid varieties such as Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, and Dendrobium are particularly susceptible to this pathogen. The infection is frequently observed in greenhouse environments and residential collections where high humidity levels and insufficient airflow provide favorable conditions for the fungus to establish itself.
Symptoms typically begin as small, sunken, dark brown or black lesions on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots may enlarge and coalesce into larger, irregular patches. Under high humidity, the center of the lesions may develop small, raised black structures known as acervuli, which release mass quantities of conidial spores.
The development and spread of Colletotrichum orchidearum are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and stagnant air. Moisture remaining on foliage after watering or misting is a primary catalyst for spore germination and infection, making proper ventilation critical for disease prevention.
Effective management requires strict sanitation practices, including the removal of infected tissues with sterilized cutting tools. Integrating systemic fungicides and adjusting the growing environment to ensure good circulation and appropriate moisture levels are essential for control. Monitoring plants for early symptoms allows for timely intervention, preventing the spread of the fungus.
