Orchid anthracnose is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum orchidophilum. This fungus specifically targets orchid species, leading to significant damage to the plant's structural integrity and aesthetic value, often causing the decline of sensitive collections if left untreated.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various epiphytic orchids, such as Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, and Dendrobium. The infection can affect the foliage, stems, and pseudobulbs, compromising the plant's ability to store nutrients and perform photosynthesis effectively.
Symptoms typically present as sunken, necrotic spots that start off small and circular. As the fungus spreads, these spots enlarge, turn dark brown or black, and may develop small, raised pustules containing fungal spores. Under high humidity, these areas may show greyish-white mycelial mats, indicating active sporulation of the pathogen.
The development of the disease is highly correlated with environmental factors, particularly stagnant air, high humidity levels, and poor light. The spores are primarily dispersed through water droplets during misting or watering, as well as through contaminated tools or handling by the grower.
