Description

Ginseng anthracnose is a destructive plant disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum panacicola. As a pathogenic fungus, it invades the plant tissue, causing localized necrosis and structural decay. The pathogen survives efficiently in plant debris and soil, making it a persistent challenge for ginseng growers globally.

The primary host for this fungus is the medicinal plant Panax ginseng. While it can attack plants at any stage of growth, it is particularly damaging to seedlings and young ginseng plants in high-density cultivation environments. The infection interferes with the plant’s ability to photosynthesize and store starch in the taproot.

Symptoms typically begin as small water-soaked spots on the foliage that eventually turn reddish-brown or gray. Under high humidity, the centers of these lesions develop acervuli, which are tiny, dark structures releasing mass amounts of spores. If the infection spreads to the stems, it causes blighting and tissue collapse, leading to the rapid decline of the entire plant.

Development of Colletotrichum panacicola is favored by warm and humid weather conditions. Optimal growth occurs when temperatures range between 20°C and 25°C accompanied by prolonged leaf wetness. Rain splashing and wind-driven water droplets are the primary mechanisms for the dispersal of fungal spores across the nursery or plantation floor.

The damage caused by this pathogen is significant and includes the following impacts:

  • Reduced vigor and stunted growth of the ginseng root system.
  • Premature defoliation, leading to lower crop yields.
  • Increased mortality rates among young nursery seedlings.
  • Severe reduction in the economic value of harvested roots.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Growers should prioritize soil drainage, sanitation of equipment, and the removal of infected plant residues. Applying specific fungicides according to a scheduled regimen during humid seasons is essential to limit the pathogen's spread and preserve the long-term health of the crop.
