Description

The disease known as Phormium anthracnose is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum phormii. This organism belongs to the group of Ascomycetes and is specifically adapted to infect plants of the genus Phormium. It disrupts the physiological processes of the leaves, significantly reducing the vigor and commercial value of the affected specimens.

The primary host for this fungus is the New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax). The pathogen attacks both cultivated ornamental varieties and plants grown for fiber production. Seedlings and young plants are particularly susceptible, as their immature tissues offer easier pathways for fungal penetration, leading to stunted growth or even plant death.

Symptoms of the infection typically include the development of necrotic spots on the foliage. These lesions are usually brown to grey in color and can vary in size. Within the spots, the fungus produces acervuli, which are small, dark fruiting bodies. Under high humidity, the pathogen may produce visible spore masses, often appearing as slimy, light-colored droplets on the leaf surface.

Development and spread of Colletotrichum phormii are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity and warm temperatures (approximately 18°C to 25°C) are optimal for spore germination and colonization. Rain splashes, overhead irrigation, and contaminated garden tools are the primary vectors for the spread of conidia from infected to healthy tissue.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant health. Key preventive measures include sanitation, such as removing infected leaves to reduce the primary inoculum, and improving airflow to keep leaf surfaces dry. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate fungicides during the growing season, specifically targeting the pathogen during high-risk weather conditions.
