The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum pyricola, which belongs to the Ascomycota phylum. It is a significant phytopathogen responsible for anthracnose in various fruit crops, leading to localized tissue necrosis and overall decline in plant health if left unmanaged.
The disease primarily affects various species of the Pyrus genus, particularly the common pear. The infection targets foliage, young shoots, and developing or harvested fruits, significantly reducing the marketability and post-harvest storage lifespan of the crop.
Visible symptoms typically begin as small, sunken, dark-brown spots on the leaves and fruit surface. Under conditions of high humidity, these lesions expand and may develop acervuli—small, cushion-like structures that produce masses of conidia, often showing a distinct pink or salmon-colored appearance.
Environmental factors such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures facilitate the rapid spread of spores. The pathogen survives in infected plant debris, such as fallen leaves and mummified fruits, serving as a primary source of inoculum for infection in subsequent growing seasons.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include proper orchard sanitation by removing and burning infected material, maintaining adequate tree spacing for better airflow, and the timely application of fungicides during susceptible growth stages to inhibit fungal development.
