Description
The disease known as soybean anthracnose is caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum rhombiforme. This fungus is a significant threat to legume crops, impacting the entire plant anatomy throughout the growing season, potentially leading to substantial yield losses if not managed correctly.
The primary host for this fungus is the soybean plant (Glycine max). The pathogen survives between cropping seasons primarily through infected plant debris, contaminated seeds, and can persist in the soil, making it a recurring challenge in fields where soybean is grown frequently without proper rotation.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as necrotic, often diamond-shaped or irregular dark lesions on stems, leaves, and pods. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces acervuli, which appear as tiny black dots on the surface of the lesions. This damage leads to premature leaf senescence and poor seed development within the pods.
The development and spread of Colletotrichum rhombiforme are heavily favored by warm temperatures and high moisture levels. Rainfall is particularly critical, as it facilitates the dispersal of spores from infected plant tissue to healthy leaves and pods, allowing the disease to spread rapidly across a field during the flowering and pod-filling stages.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers should focus on using high-quality disease-free seeds, implementing crop rotation systems to break the pathogen's life cycle, and deep-plowing to bury crop residues. During the growing season, the application of targeted fungicides is recommended when weather conditions are conducive to disease outbreaks to ensure a stable harvest.
